today got up to 41 degrees fahrenheit. a great day for being out so here are some photos i got. we just hiked a little way up a ski trail near our house. the lake in the photos is lake itasca.
these are photos from one of our projects, which is to test the effects of soot and dust on snow. it is a project directly related to pollution causing harm to winter ecosystems. because snow traps air, it acts as an insulator for the ground, keeping plant roots, microbes, and hibernating animals alive through the winter. without this insulating layer on the earth, the extreme temperatures can freeze the ground, killing many plants and animals and crippling the ecosystem. soot and dust layers on the snow cause melting. we want to know how much.
